On Wednesday (June 22), British luxury car manufacturer Bentley Motors announced some details about its upcoming NFT collection.
According to Bentley’s press release, Bentley is “making its first venture into the NFT marketplace with a one-time NFT drop on the carbon-neutral Polygon network, scheduled for September 2022 and limited to just 208 pieces.”
Why 208? This is because “208 has special relevance to Bentley, being both the top speed of its fastest Grand Tourer (the Continental GT Speed) and the total production run of the iconic R-Type Continental of 1952 – the car that inspired the modern Bentley design DNA.”
The press release went on to say that “the genesis Bentley NFT will be a unique artwork created by Bentley Design, and will offer unique access and exclusive rewards to holders.”
As for why Bentley chose Polygon for the minting of these NFTs, they say that “Polygon recently attained carbon-neutral status and has pledged to go carbon negative by the end of 2022,” which means that “all Bentley NFTs will be entirely carbon-neutral.” Polygon aims to offer end-to-end carbon neutrality by 2030, by which date Bentley plans to only offer electric cars, and so it was important for them that their first step into the Web3 space was done “in a sustainable way.”
Alain Favey, Member of the Board of Management (Sales & Marketing) at Bentley Motors, had this to say:
“Bentley customers are living their lives online, purchasing luxury goods with digital currency, and establishing businesses in the Metaverse. We’ve always engaged our customers where they explore their passions, and today that means being present in digital marketplaces and offering NFT assets. We’ve seen how NFTs have raised the profiles of both art and artist, and we believe the same can happen in the luxury automotive space.“
And Ryan Wyatt, CEO at Polygon, added:
“Polygon is excited to expand our partnerships in the automobile industry, by working with the most prestigious brand in its sector. Polygon will provide the sustainable, low-fee infrastructure Bentley requires for its foray into Web3. By embracing this novel tech, Bentley secures its position in the next iteration of the internet, and doing so via Polygon’s carbon-neutral network will assist the automaker on its journey toward attaining carbon-neutrality by 2030.“
This is how Mihailo Bjelic, Co-Founder of Polygon, welcomed Bentley Motors to the Polygon family earlier today:
