Bitcoin fans and community members around the world have pledged to run on Friday, Sept. 6 in support of the late Hal Finney.

Team Satoshi Running For Hal Finney

Finney, one of the original pioneers of bitcoin’s development, contributed greatly to the history of cryptography and its application to digital currencies. Despite battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Finney was able to pitch in on the early days of bitcoin and played a role in the currency’s growth before it became a global phenonmenon. Finney passed away in 2014 but has lived on in the memory of bitcoin’s lore, including being featured in Nathaniel Popper’s early history of bitcoin Digital Gold

Now, a group of bitcoin enthusiasts going by the name Team Satoshi are hoping to generate support for the currency and the late Hal Finney by organizing runs in his memory. Finney was an avid runner and documented some of his trips on Twitter.

Vitus Zeller, who organized the event, said that he hopes to commemorate Finney’s last run,

“I thought it would fit great as a bitcoin and cypherpunk community event to ask enthusiasts to join in for a run on the 10th anniversary of his last real run.”

Last week, Zeller and members of Team Satoshi participated in an unofficial triathlon across Europe to demonstrate their support for BTC.
