Tennis legend Maria Sharapova recently shared her thought about Web3 and NFTs on day two of the Binance Blockchain Week Paris 2022 conference.
These comments during a fireside chat with James Rothwell, VP of Global Marketing at Binance.
Sharapova, who retired from professional tennis in February 2020 at the age of 32, was asked by Rothwell what was bringing successful sport people and organizations to Web3 an the crypto industry.
She replied:
“A few different things. I’d say the first [is that] it’s an entirely new revenue stream that the athletes, and talent in general, just hasn’t tapped in to the maximum of what they can and they’re just still learning…
“For me, it’s a little bit different because I retired a couple of years ago, and I’m starting to understand that I had this incredible visual platform from a fan base for over 20 years of my career where the fans got to see me compete and give interviews and so they were interacting with me but my only interaction with them was through social media essentially or some of the autograph sessions that I do, but they were very quick, and this world of Web3 allows me to have this interaction to them now following my career.”
And earlier today, journalist Rachel Wolfson published a report for Cointelegraph about her interview with Sharapova in Paris.
Sharapova told Wolfson:
“I’m crypto curious and would like to figure out how to bridge the incredible physical experiences that I’ve been able to have with my fans over so many years. I’m now finding ways to include experiences in the digital world, so that’s what I’m most excited about… The Web3 experience has given me access to my fans in entirely new ways…
“I’m really interested in the NFT space because it bridges my passion for fashion, interior design and creating spaces that are unique to individuals and communities. I’ve become more interested in this space because it has more of a design perspective. It’s also an entirely new revenue stream that both artists and women are discovering.“
