Pornhub, the world’s biggest porn site, has started accepting bitcoin and litecoin payments for its premium services, effectively expanding the number of cryptoassets it accepts as payment.
Back in 2018, Pornhub added Verge (XVG) as a payment option in what was allegedly an “exclusive” partnership, and was set to start using it as an alternative to PayPal. Later on that year, the website added TRON’s TRX and Horizen (ZEC) as payment methods.
Now, the website has announced the addition of both bitcoin and litecoin:
CoinTelegraph reports that Pornhub’s vice president Corey Price said in a press release that the website has over 130 million visitors per day and is “excited to now offer two widely-used and leading digital currencies for our users.”
Price touted the website has been “testing and implementing new technology for everyday consumers far ahead of the mainstream market.” Pornhub itself, is worth noting, reportedly gets 3 billion page views per month and was founded in 2007 in Montreal, Canada.
Many cypherpunks believed that porn would be one of the first industries to accept cryptocurrencies. Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, voiced a similar opinion on the Bitcointalk forum in 2010, writing:
Bitcoin would be convenient for people who don’t have a credit card or don’t want to use the cards they have, either don’t want the spouse to see it on the bill or don’t trust giving their number to “porn guys”, or afraid of recurring billing.
It’s worth noting that firms like Microsoft and Overstock started accepting bitcoin payments back in 2014. Popular online gaming platform Steam was also accepting bitcoin payments, but dropped BTC as a payment option during the 2017 bull run citing “high fees and volatility.”
