Bitcoin is to become one of the kit sponsors of Premiership football team Watford FC, with the cryptocurrency’s symbol appearing on the shirtsleeve, the club announced on Thursday.
Nicknamed “The Hornets”, Watford FC will also accept bitcoin as payment for club merchandise as part of a drive by the club’s primary shirt sponsor Sportsbet.io to improve awareness and use of cryptocurrencies.
Giving Back
Justin Le Brocque, head of marketing at Sportsbet.io, a fiat and cryptocurrency online casino and betting website, said that putting the bitcoin logo on the sleeve “felt like a fun way to give something back while also showing them our support”. He added:
Our partnership with Watford marks a major disruption in the world of traditional sports sponsorship, and by adding the Bitcoin logo we hope this world’s first partnership will create even more buzz around cryptocurrencies.
Watford FC said the sponsorship would be crowd-funded, allowing anyone who holds bitcoin to share in certain advantages granted to Watford FC supporters.
