Facebook has recently opened several new blockchain positions on Facebook Careers.
The social media titan is looking to hire a marketing specialist, three blockchain engineers, and a blockchain data scientist.
According to the information in the job description, facebook is looking to expand its recently-launched blockchain team:
“At Facebook, we have established a new team building blockchain technologies. It's a small, fast-growing, but talented group of people who are passionate about changing the world. (…) The blockchain team is a startup within Facebook, with a vision to make blockchain technology work at Facebook scale.”
The ultimate goal of their blockchain startup is to “help billions of people with access to things they don’t have now – that could be things like equitable financial services, it could be new ways to save, it could be new ways to share information”.
Although the goal is highly ambitious, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. What exactly is facebook working on?

Earlier this year, business news network Cheddar reported that facebook was working on its own cryptocurrency. One company spokesperson responded to the claims:
“Like many other companies Facebook is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology. This new small team will be exploring many different applications. We don’t have anything further to share.”
The ambiguous statement did not confirm nor deny the claims, but there seems to be a hint on the job description for marketing specialist. It is mandatory for the applicant to have “experience with payments or the blockchain”. This suggests that facebook may indeed be creating its own crypto token.
Despite all the speculation, one thing seems to be clear: Facebook has been working on a blockchain project at least since May. It was at this time that the company underwent a major internal restructuring, the largest of the last 15 years. During the process, the new blockchain team – composed of around 10 members – was assembled, with David Marcus appointed as leader. Former president of Paypal and Coinbase board member, David Marcus had to step down from his previous role as head of Facebook Messenger.
Despite the fact that not much is known about the project, it did not prevent Anthony Pompliano, the host of popular crypto podcast “Off The Chain”, from declaring that facebook will be building the “most used product in crypto”.
